Eagan, MN: Throughout May and June 2014, environmental designer Carrie Christensen and ceramicist Anna Metcalf worked with students at Glacier Hills Elementary to transform the school’s landscape with public art. During the residency, students, artists and teachers applied engineering design and the artistic design processes to come up with a feasible way to incorporate functional public art into the existing rain garden and nearby landscape, mitigating ice formation patterns on the nearby sidewalk and city street. Students assessed water patterns and soil conditions, shared and recorded stories of personal relationships to water – especially the Mississippi River watershed, and designed and created ceramic tiles. This collaborative, multidisciplinary project adds art making into an existing STEM framework and brings alive the ways the knowledge and expertise in one discipline (landscape design, soil and water conservation, environmental studies, ceramics) can usefully inform individual and collective artistic expression. http://vimeo.com/97983285
