Seitu Jones, a public artist based in St. Paul, Minn., was awarded the prestigious Joyce Award on Monday, February 4th. The $50,000 award, from the Joyce Foundation, is given annually to fund new works by artists of color. Jones will collaborate with Public Art St. Paul to create The Community Meal, a dinner with 2,000 guests that will stretch a half mile across the city of St. Paul. This project aims to promote dialogue within the community and will explore themes of food production, marketing and consumption with the support of locals ranging from urban farmers to spoken word artists. The Community Meal is scheduled to take place in September 2014 at the culmination of Jones’ “listening project” with St. Paul residents over the next year.
