Los Angeles, Calif. – French artist Vincent Lamouroux covered Silver Lake’s vacant Sunset Pacific Motel–also known as the “Bates Motel”–with ecologically safe, opaque white limewash. Even the palm trees and billboard on the property appeared bright white against the blue sky. Titled Projection, Lamouroux’s intervention transformed the structure temporarily and encouraged rethinking of its place in the local urban landscape and history.

The Sunset Pacific Motel has a history of crime, and was closed down in the early 2000s. There have been multiple attempts to reopen it, but it is now slated for demolition.

Since its opening on April 26, 2015,  Projection was heavily visited and photographed. The project’s website features images from Instagram with #ProjectionLA. The installation was on view for two weeks.

Such public art projects such as Detroit.Demolition.Disneyland have also used color to call attention to abandoned buildings.
